The Swan Valley is the state's oldest wine region and celebrated 180 years of winemaking in 2014.  

With its reliably warm and dry climate, the Valley became the birthplace of viticulture during the early settlement of Western Australia and still produces some of the country’s best Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Shiraz and Petit Verdot varieties.

The unique conditions enable extra ripening time to produce the high sugar levels required for liqueur Verdelho and liqueur Shiraz – both rarely made outside this region of Western Australia.

The tradition of small boutique wineries in the Swan Valley is the foundation of this wine region’s charm. Among the big international players, such as Houghton and Sandalford, are many smaller wineries – places where the people who make the wine are the ones who greet and serve you at the cellar door.

In recent years, an influx of young, innovative and sophisticated winemakers to Swan Valley wineries has brought a fresh new style and finesse to table wine. Over half of the varieties produced in this region are only available for purchase at the cellar doors of the wineries themselves.
